Your Eye Examination

How long will my examination take?

Your examination will take 45 minutes. Please allow sufficient time.

What is done during my examination?

Our eye examination is tailored to you and your visual requirements. It includes determining your prescription and checking the health of your eyes. We also measure the pressure of your eyes and perform a visual field examination. If necessary your pupils will be dilated for a thorough posterior eye examination.

How much will my eye examination cost?

The cost of your consultation depends on whether you are eligible for NHS funded care.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Please bring all spectacles you currently wear with you for your appointment.
Please bring a list of your current medication.

Diabetic patients will be dilated so please note that you may not be able to drive after your examination.
Please bring your NHS number (found on your medical card) and national insurance number.
Please allow plenty of time for your appointment, so we can do a thorough eye examination.

Patients with low vision please bring your current magnifiers.
Contact lens wearers please wear your lenses for your all your appointment. You should also bring you contact lens case and spectacles.

Why eye exams are important

Your eyesight is a precious sense - so it is very important that you have regular eye examinations, at least every 2 years, whether you feel you need spectacles or not.
Recent research suggested that there is a lack of information available to the public and that they are not educated or informed about health risks.

48% stated that deteriorating eyesight was one of their key concerns
82% of us would least like to lose our sight
87% said that they would be more willing to go for an eye examination if they knew it detected medical problems
1 in 10 claim they have not had an eye test for more than 5 years
68% of the population state that they have experienced some sight problems

In addition, according to the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) nine out of ten people fear losing their sight above any other sense but one in three still failed to have an eye test in the last two years. In addition two million people in the UK are at risk of needlessly losing their sight.

We are registered with the local Primary Care Trust to provide domiciliary eye examinations to patients who are housebound.

corporate eyecare:

The corporate eyecare scheme allows businesses to use ryatt optometry to provide staff with eye examinations helping employers fulfil their obligations.
The health and safety display screen equipment (DSE) states that:

‘all employed habitual users of DSE are entitled to an eye examination paid for by their employer. The employer is also required to pay for any spectacles required specifically for VDU use.’

Our scheme provides you with a comprehensive individual employee VDU eye examination report.

The 1992 Health and Safety (VDU) Regulations
Employers whose staff use VDUs have a responsibility to provide:
Full eye examination by a qualified optometrist. A screening test alone does not satisfy the requirements.
Regular follow up eye examinations, at a time depending on the individual circumstances and a recommendation given by the optometrist.
Eye exams for new employees.
VDU corrective spectacles, if required, for VDU use.
